Pass it ON

Pass It On is a new program creating opportunities for Sabin CDC residents to dispose of or repurpose home goods, furnishings and to recycle items thus removing these items from the waste stream. Pass It On has evolved from a single day of trash collection with materials moving straight to the landfill to a 4 day/quarterly recycle and upcycle program.

In 2022, Sabin collected approximately 12,000 lbs of waste from 300+ households at 16 sites. The Sabin community realized that this past approach was not sustainable, and we knew we could better serve both the residents and the environment. Funding will allow Sabin to expand the Pass It On program to a quarterly program to meet the goal of creating a sustainable waste management program, and to minimize the amount of solid waste that would be otherwise disposed of in the landfill. Community building will be a welcome side benefit.

Under the new Pass It On model, Sabin has built relationships with community partners that demonstrate sustainable waste management practices. These partners include Community Warehouse, Free Geek, Repair PDX, Cracked Pots, Scrap PDX. These organizations take or repair items from the collection event that meet their organizations standards to repair or scrap.

An inventory has allowed us to create an educational component of the program for residents regarding composting and recycling. Sabin has been challenged by finding trash in both the compost and recycling facilities. The opportunity to educate in preparation for recurring events will help the community to better understand and take advantage of the compost and recycling programs already in place at the Sabin properties. Residents have taken recycling to a new level.  Ultimately Sabin would like to be able to share this program with other residential communities in the Portland Metropolitan Area.

About Community

Sabin’s Livability Initiative is an ongoing and organization-wide project to intentionally improve the livability of the culturally diverse neighborhoods that we serve in North East Portland. Livability is the sum of factors that add up to a community’s quality of life. Livability is the presence of color, art, and diversity, but it’s also unusable sidewalks, skyrocketing rent prices, and lack of green space.
